The Department of Chest Surgery

The Department of Chest Surgery has a long and glorious history. In the 1950s, the Department of Chest was founded by Professor Huo Luanqiang and Fang Zuoping, experts in chest surgery. A chest surgery group was set up in the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1980s, the Department of Chest Surgery was independently established. Professor Yang Mingxun was appointed the first director. In the 1950s, the first domestic artificial heart-lung machine and cardiac pacemaker were applied in our department. The patient getting lung transplantation in the Department of Chest Surgery of our hospital now survives the longest in China. The strength of department attracts patients form Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and even across the country. In recent years, under the leadership of Professor Lin Qiang, the administrative director, the Department has made a great progress in clinical work and scientific research. The Department of Chest Surgery primarily treats various chest diseases including benign and malignant lung tumor, benign and malignant esophageal carcinoma, mediastinal tumor, tracheal tumor, chest malformation, chest wall diseases and chest trauma, particularly the expansive radical field of late, giant and difficult chest tumors. In addition, it has rich experience in diagnosis and surgical treatment of various lung nodules. The Department performs more than 1000 surgeries annually. Regarding to scientific research, the Department has been granted the National Natural Science Fund, Research Fund by the Ministry of Health, Shanghai Natural Science Fund, Key Scientific Research Project and General Project of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau and Important Disease Cooperation Project of Shanghai Health System.

At present, the Department has 20 physicians. There are one senior physician, six associate physicians, seven attending physicians, one doctoral supervisor and four master's supervisors. There are 90 beds in the Southern and Northern Branch. The Administrative Director is Lin Qiang (Chief Physician), Deputy Director (Northern Branch) and Executive Deputy Director (Southern Branch, in charge of daily work) Ruan Zheng (Associate Chief Physician).
